John the Baptist....Fully Committed in Service to Jesus
LUKE Chapter 7:24-30
(7:24) After John's messenger's left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind
Jesus reminds them that they went into the wilderness to "Hear and see John" and the message he was speaking.
(7:25) "If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces."
John was dressed in camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist.
They definitely didn't go out to see some dressed this way.
(7:26) "But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet." (27)"This is the one about whom it is written: 'I will send My messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you."
How was John more than a prophet?
No other prophets were foretold in prophecy
The Holy Spirit filled him in the womb
First prophet in 400 years
He will prepare the way for the Messiah!
(7:28) "I tell you, among those born of women there is none greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he."
The contrast here is being "In" and being "Out" of the Kingdom.
Covenant is a "Contract" between God and Man.
Old Testament Covenant "Law"
New Testament Covenant "Grace"
(7:29) "All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus' word, acknowledged that God's way was right, because they had been baptized by John."
When God's word is preached, people have two choices:
Follow the World
(7:30) "But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God's purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John."
They thought they were keeping God's Law, but they really had rejected the will of God for themselves.
