Learning to Answer the Reins
Matthew 5:5

I. Meekness as a Christian attribute: The virtue of meekness is developed through faith and surrender to God's sovereignty.

II. Meekness as a Christian attitude: We must embrace a spirit of meekness before we can practice it toward others.

A. It should characterize our initial reception of the gospel - James 1:21
B. It should characterize our growth in the Spirit - Galatians 5:22
C. It should characterize our witness to the lost - 1 Peter 3:15
D. It should characterize the way we deal with others who stumble - Galatians 6:1

III. Meekness as a Christian activity: We must practice meekness in the greatest tests of our faith.

A.Humility in the face of arrogance.
B. Restraint in the face of provocation.
C. Gentleness in the face of harshness.

IV. Meekness and the Christian birthright: We will ultimately receive the covenant promises of God. "they shall inherit the earth"
